Hot Cross Bun Crochet Pattern

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing a very cute Easter crochet pattern with you: a hot cross bun! This Easter treat is a deliciously spiced sweet bun filled with dried fruit and sometimes (if you’re lucky) topped with an icing cross. It’s traditionally eaten on Good Friday but it’s also super fun and festive to have anytime near Easter. Lately, I’ve been crocheting all kinds of baked goods for the Amigurumi Bake Off and posting them over on my Instagram, and I was inspired to try and create my own pattern. If you’re looking for move Easter crochet patterns, you may also like my Easter Bunny Among Us Pattern as well. Enjoy!

The Pattern:

Materials you need:

  • White worsted (4) weight yarn
  • Medium Brown worsted (4) weight yarn
  • Tan worsted (4) weight yarn
  • Dark brown worsted (4) weight yarn
  • A small amount of black embroidery floss/thread
  • A small amount of pink embroidery floss/thread
  •  3.50 mm crochet hook
  •  Yarn needle
  • Embroidery needle or sewing needle
  •  Stuffing
  • 2 safety eyes (I used 10 mm)

Crochet terms needed:

Sc = single crochet

Sc2tog = single crochet two together

Sc3tog = single crochet three together

 Ss = slip stitch

Ch = chain

 st = stitch

mc = magic circle

( ) = repeat

For the bun:

Start with medium brown yarn.

Row 1: Sc 4 in a mc. Ss to first st. (4 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1. Sc 3x in each st. Ss. (12 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1. Sc in st, sc 3x in next st, (sc in next 2 sts, sc 3 in next st), sc. Ss. (20 sts)

Row 4: Ch 1. Sc in 2 sts, sc 3x in next st, (sc in next 4 sts, sc 3 in next st), sc 2. Ss. (28 sts)

Rows 5-6: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Ss. (28 sts)

Rows 7-11: Change to tan yarn. Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Ss. (28 sts)

Row 12: Ch 1. Ch 1. Sc in 2 sts, sc3tog, (sc in next 4 sts, sc3tog), sc 2. Ss. (20 sts)

Row 13: Ch 1. Sc in st, sc 3tog, (sc in next 2 sts, sc3tog), sc. Ss. (12 sts)

Add safety eyes between rows 8 and 9, 3 sts apart. Using black embroidery floss, add a 2 st wide smile between rows 10 and 11 and add 1 st wide eyebrows 1 row above each eye. With pink embroidery floss, add 1 st wide cheeks 1 row below each eye. Stuff the bun.

Row 14: Ch 1. (Sc3tog). Ss. (4 sts)

Bind off and close the hole. Weave in ends.

For the cross (make 2 of these pieces):

Start with white yarn.

Row 1: Ch 12. Bind off.

Sew the 2 cross pieces across the medium brown section of the bun. They should be perpendicular to each other. Weave in ends.

For the raisins (make as many as you like – I made 9)

Using dark brown yarn, pull up a loop from any of the medium brown sts. Ch 1, and ss in the next st or row over. Bind off. Repeat this to add as many raisins as you like. I only added raisins to the medium brown area of the bun but you could certainly add them to the tan section as well.

I hope you enjoyed this hot cross bun crochet pattern! Happy crocheting,
